Review

Like its predecessor, Ghosts: True Stories from British Columbia (1990),
this collection of anecdotes about apparitions, spectres, ghosts, and
other paranormal phenomena will fascinate and entertain the general
audience for whom it is intended. Divided into eight chapters, the book
focuses particular attention on place-ghosts—those who have haunted,
or continue to haunt, such B.C. locations as ranches, homes, theatres,
hotels, pubs, graveyards, and highways.

The author claims that “although no solid scientific proof can be
found that ghosts exist, there is nonetheless a wealth of anecdotal
evidence.” His book is devised to share that wealth. Some of his
stories, such as those about the Hat Creek Ranch and the McPherson
Playhouse ghosts, are deeply embedded into British Columbia folklore.
The tales vary in length but each is concisely written and well
documented. None are truly frightening, but all deal with the
inexplicable sudden drops in room temperature, self-operating
appliances, electronic devices, and the like.

Belyk has done a good job of presenting these accounts of the
unexplained in an unbiased manner, so that the reader is left to draw
his or her conclusions about their veracity.
