Review

Fans of actor George Clooney, former star of the television series ER,
will find this “first biography” unsatisfying. The first half of the
book features information culled from a variety of interviews and
articles. In lieu of critical thinking, we are subjected to attempts by
the author to be cute and clever. Chapter titles include “Once upon a
Codpiece,” “Boy George,” “Hard at Work and Hard at Play,” and
“George in the Jungle.” The second half of the book—a random
collection of odds and ends—includes an Internet resource guide, a
“Viewer’s Guide” to the show, “A Reviewer’s Diary of ER,”
and a George Clooney filmography. Also included are Mad magazine’s
satirizing comic strip, the ER Drinking Game, quotations from Clooney
and his alter ego Doug Ross, and many glossy photos. In its attempt to
include everything, Bedside Manners leaves us with very little indeed.
