Review

Every year brings a clutch of new books on investing and general
financial management. Winning the Tax Game is one of the most practical,
down-to-earth guides for the year and for long-range planning.

Chartered accountant Tim Cestnick is president of a Toronto tax
education and consulting firm. He teaches at the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Ontario, and is the tax columnist for The Globe and
Mail’s Report on Business. His approach, which combines investment
planning with tax strategy, is a critically important one in a high-tax
nation such as Canada.

Topics include basic tax planning, strategies for employees and for the
self-employed, and strategies for investors and for retirement. The
latter includes advice on making RRSP withdrawals. There are chapters on
holding American real estate, reporting U.S. income, Quebec tax issues,
and planning your estate.

Cestnick writes in a clear, refreshing style. The book has an excellent
layout with numerous subheadings, and colored boxes with captions such
as “Caution!” and “Action Step.” Individual anecdotes, set off
in italics, partner explanations and advice. In a crowded field, Winning
the Tax Game stands out.
