Review

Aimed at the overland budget traveler, The Globetrotter’s Guide is
both practical and imaginative. The authors speak from a wealth of
experience and research. Moreover, they write with flair, homespun
wisdom, and a sense of humor.

Why travel? Wayne Smits suggests that we travel to find parts of
ourselves that could never be discovered at home. (In The Prophet’s
Camel Bell, Margaret Laurence voices the same conviction.) Caryl
Dolinko, who has journeyed alone to more than 60 countries in 14 years,
finds that travel opens her eyes “to a reality many people cannot
imagine” and has given her “a clearer understanding of the meaning
of freedom.”

The well-organized guide, which is compiled from the authors’ travels
through 80 countries and enlivened with sketches and cartoons, offers
countless tips on such important topics as trip preparation, budgeting,
health, hygiene, transportation, accommodation, effective bargaining,
avoiding scams, and culture shock. Highly recommended.
