Review

Another in the Natural History series edited by R.D. Lawrence, this book
should appeal to readers aged 9 to 13, stimulating their interest in
this group of carnivores. Illustrations (excellent photographs, mostly
by the authors, some good washes, and pen-and-ink sketches) work well to
clarify and extend the clear and informative text. The author, a
zoologist obviously in command of his material and in love with his
subject, writes in a style that is lucid, nonpatronizing, and
appropriate for his intended readers, who learn that polar bears have
black skin, and that bears do not really hibernate, but rather go into
deep lethargy from which they can rouse quickly. A list of suggested
further readings would be a useful addition to a book of this type. The
price seems excessive for a book of this length and may deter many
prospective purchasers.
