Review

A father and young son’s walk after supper one balmy summer evening
evokes memories of the past in this delightful story for young children.
The father remembers that his father’s farm used to encompass the area
where modern houses now surround their old farmhouse and he recalls
images that bring the old pastures and barns alive for the boy.

The accompanying illustrations complement the nostalgic quality of the
text; settings are calm and peaceful, and colors, though rich, are
muted. The loving companionship between father and son is very evident
as they walk in the yard among the old-fashioned flowers and sit
together in the rocking-chair on the spacious veranda.

This is an ideal picture book for bedtime: the child is tucked into bed
at the end of the story and the peaceful rhythms of the narrative are
conducive to lulling the young listener to sleep.
