Review

Julie Lawson has given us another perfect pearl in this deceptively
simple story of a young girl and her grandfather. This story actually
strings a number of pearls together to create a book both children and
adults will treasure. Karen, the story’s narrator, receives many gifts
from her grandfather, including a love of nature, an appreciation of
myth, wonderful memories, a sense of adventure, and the ability to cope
with loss. In the beauty of Lawson’s prose, we receive the gifts as
well.

Those who know British Columbia will instantly recognize its beauty in
McLaren’s pictures. She captures mood, scene and facial expression
with precision and purity. As with her book The Dragon’s Pearl, Lawson
has chosen an illustrator whose paintings perfectly complement the
quality of her written work.
