Review

Humor runs through this story of an imaginative little girl who lives
beside a playground. Every day she meets a different monster; she
becomes friends with all of them. But her family won’t allow her to
invite them to lunch. Then she meets Michael, a fun playmate, who is
very welcome. When her mother tells her her friends can always come to
lunch, she shouts across to the playground and all her happy creatures
come running for the best Sunday lunch, ever.

Godfrey’s writing style is most appealing. Wonderful descriptions of
the monster, troll, dinosaur, space creature, dragons, and gremlin are
given. Alliteration, rhyming words, and poetic pacing make this an
outstanding read-aloud book.

Wilkinson’s full-color illustrations show fascinating detail. Young
readers can study the pictures, searching for still another unusual,
fanciful interpretation from her brush.

Children aged 4 to 7 will treasure this story.
