Review

David loves bubbles and one day he blows “the most giant bubble in the
whole world.” The giant bubble picks up an amazing number of items,
including “1 baby clapping, 2 sparrows flapping, 3 monarch
butterflies.” Finally, after “10 melting ice-cream cones,” David
decides to prick the bubble; all the articles come “tumbling down upon
the grass behind the town.”

This is a cumulative tale, with strong rhythms to help children learn
counting and rhyming endings. Beeson’s cartoonlike illustrations
capture and extend the story, and add comedy to the zany happenings.
Children will love the dénouement. Included is “David’s Giant
Bubble Mix,” with which readers can try out their own imaginative
adventures.

Bubblemania is fun to read aloud to preschool and primary-grade
children. The detail of the amusing illustrations makes this a book
children will enjoy.
