Review

Weis has written a young-adult mystery novel with a familiar formula. A
trio discover some unusual activities, investigate on their own, and
ultimately succeed in bringing about the capture of the criminal. The
book touches briefly on wildlife preservation as the young people
attempt to save the almost extinct peregrine falcon from the hands of
smugglers. But what sets this novel apart is its delicate treatment of
the main character’s disillusionment and pain when her parents
separate. This subplot is handled realistically, without any
happily-ever-afters. However, the character’s courage during the final
confrontation with the criminals provides her with renewed
self-confidence. She is then able to view her personal problems with
courage. This is a smooth-flowing, action-packed novel that will be of
greatest interest to the intermediate reading group.
