Review

Written for young-adult readers, this historical adventure is set in the
tenth century. Two young children—brother and sister—are kidnapped
from their home in Ireland by Viking raiders. They are taken to Norway
and enslaved by a powerful earl. They suffer many indignities and
privations, but manage to remain together and establish some positive
relationships with other household slaves. Although they come to terms
with their new situation, they continue to dream of escaping and
returning to Ireland. Eventually they do escape, but only to Iceland. It
is to be hoped that reaching Iceland represents just the preliminary
stage of the story of their journey home.

Adolescents will greatly enjoy this action-packed book: its young
protagonists are sympathetic characters who will be easy for young
readers to relate to. The setting and time period are convincingly
evoked.
