Review

It’s the twenty-third century and sixth-graders Reann and her best
friend, Jared (the cutest boy in school), are captured by Torkan aliens
and taken to the planet Freetal. They are convinced by Gam, a slave, to
help rescue the Emperor’s daughter. Princess Vinegold, who was
kidnapped by Rothgar the Terrible, is being held captive on the planet
Weke. After an odiferous chase over an acid moat, through an underground
garbage tank, and past attackers with freeze pistols, Reann, Jared, and
Princess Vinegold escape.

Godfrey is the author of several titles popular with junior-grade
students. He writes with humor and imagination on a wide range of topics
that appeal to both boys and girls ages 10-12. This book could be a
welcome addition to a science-fiction unit, a model for students’
creative writing, or simply a good read. Its cover (an eye-catching
picture of Andovian slime worms); its interesting examples of
Godfrey’s technical imagination (vid phones, Lizoids); and its
conversational style, short chapters, and exciting episodes should make
this a popular book.
