Review

Reaching North is the third book by Jamie Bastedo, an environmental
consultant and long-time resident of Yellowknife. Bastedo’s nature
series, which was broadcast live on CBC radio for several years, earned
him the reputation of being the North’s answer to David Suzuki.
Drawing upon the personal experiences of Northerners, and featuring
excerpts from Bastedo’s radio shows, this compilation of 12 stories
answers every conceivable question you could have about the subarctic.
Did you know that winter is a booming tourist season for Yellowknife
because of the northern lights? Have you ever wondered how a beaver
survives the winter trapped under the ice? How do you protect yourself
from the scourge of the North (i.e., blackflies and mosquitos)? This
engaging book brings to life the pioneering spirit of those who have
chosen to make the North their home.
