Review

This children’s book celebrates the seasons through a series of
surreal and haunting illustrations accompanied by poems selected from
sources as disparate as Wallace Stevens, Japanese verse, Ethiopian
prayer, and Margaret Atwood.

Each of the double-page spreads presents a fanciful illustration, a
poem, and a brief synopsis of the poetry’s origin. The only criticism
is that some of the explanatory notes are printed on a patterned part of
the page and are difficult to read. More positively, some of the
illustrations are enriched by hidden games, compelling for both adult
readers and children. In fact, this book has a powerful simplicity as
accessible to children as it is appealing to adults.

Seasons is an ideal gift, a virtual “child’s coffee-table book”
suitable for very young to preteen children.
