Review

This delightful children’s book completes the “Simon” quartet on
the seasons. The text is illustrated by the author and the delicate,
ethereal pictures—all countryside settings of pond, meadow, pasture,
and hillside—complement the whimsical nature of the writing.

Simon loves the summer and devises several ingenious ways to prolong
the season. Of course these methods do not actually work, but Simon is
compensated at summer’s end by the return of his friends from
vacation.

Preschool- and kindergarten-age children will particularly enjoy this
book. My two-year-old loves it and is especially attracted by the
illustrations. They have a dreamlike quality that is very effective.
