Review

This is a light-hearted teaching story that humorously presents colors
to young children and reinforces them in their minds.

Mr. Hall has built a new house and wonders what color it should be. He
tries matching the color to the house’s surroundings, but of course
the landscape keeps changing. Blossoms die, dandelions blow away, dogs
disappear, apples are picked, and each time he thinks he has found a
color, it is no longer right. Frustrated, he splashes the house with all
his leftover paint and, while everyone loves its brightness, who can be
sure what Mr. Hall will do next?

Children three to six years old will enjoy this story. “That’s it,
thought Mr. Hall” will become a familiar sentence to those learning to
read. They will also recognize many other repeated words. Interest is
sustained by curiosity as to what Mr. Hall could possibly do next. The
text includes readers and keeps them guessing and thinking.

Steffler uses bold, bright colors in her illustrations. She also
cleverly divides the pictures: the top portion shows Mr. Hall at work
and the bottom shows children playing, gardening, picking apples, or
raking leaves.

The book is sturdy and assembled to withstand hours of small children
turning its pages and studying its pictures. Educational and enjoyable!
