Review

Move your mouse and double-click on Get Wired, You’re Hired. Mark
Swartz, Canada’s “Internet work search authority,” has updated his
book with megabytes of terrific information for job seekers and career
changers.

The soundness of Swartz’s vocational advice is not surprising given
that he is a professional career manager. His book, which features an
easy, conversational style, is divided into four parts. “Wired
Basics” introduces the reader to the Net. “Get Wired and Ready”
underlines the importance of self-assessment, career planning, and
knowing how to send your materials electronically. “Search for
Work—The Wired Way!” covers research, networking, finding jobs
on-line, and special resources for different equity groups. “Stay
Wired” covers work-search skills such as handling voice mail, staying
organized, and negotiating an offer.

Swartz is a welcome voice in our career literature. The vast majority
of sites are Canadian; he is both an advocate of the new technology and
a healthy sceptic. I confess I have folded a lot of pages, starred
paragraphs, and have so any post-it notes sticking out of the book it
looks like it has a yellow Mohawk. It’s a great addition to a library
or personal reference collection.
