Review

When a bird hatches from a square red, white, and blue egg, the reader
can expect anything. Few will be disappointed by this light-hearted
book.

Mr. and Mrs. Boid take the baby bird home and are delighted when he
calls them Ma-ma and Pa-pa. Baby Boid develops a liking for rock music,
teaches himself to read from the paper in the bottom of his cage, and
one day climbs down the fire escape and goes exploring in New York city.

He meets dogs and cats and has hilarious adventures, finally returning
safely to his happy home. In the humorous ending, Boid imagines himself
terrorizing a gang of vicious cats as he takes on the identity of
“Ramboid.” This is a delightful story for children ages 6 to 10, and
is longer than most picture books. The plot reveals unexpected twists
that are sure to intrigue young readers and encourage them to enjoy this
story again and again. The book is liberally illustrated with clever,
bright cartoon pictures, designed to help the child with the text.
