Review

Sarah, a young spider monkey, guides us on a day’s journey through the
South American rain forest. This book’s rhyming question-and-answer
format introduces many of the creatures native to that habitat.

Daigneault’s exquisitely detailed illustrations make us feel that we
have stepped into the midst of the rain forest. Each double-page spread
depicts a variety of animals in their natural surroundings. Particularly
observant young readers may be challenged to try to spot Sarah herself
tucked away somewhere in each illustration.

Curriculum connections are many. Early-primary teachers will use this
book (possibly in its “big book” format) when studying rhyming
words, or as an introduction or follow-up to a trip to the zoo. Junior
grade teachers would find it useful as a supplementary source when doing
the unit on the rain forest. At all levels, it would be the perfect
choice to stimulate discussion about environmental issues such as the
destruction of the rain forest.

Bogart is already well-known and loved by countless young readers for
her earlier books, Malcolm’s Runaway Soap and Daniel’s Dog. Sarah
Saw a Blue Macaw is certain to become a favorite as well.

A first choice for personal collections as well as school and public
libraries.
