Review

If you have a budding entomologist in your house, this is the book to
get. It is filled with the information needed to identify most common
insects found in the home, backyard, or neighborhood natural space. The
book is well organized. Hickman treats each micro-environment
independently, focusing on the creatures most likely to be encountered
there. Seasonal changes are taken into account, as are the creatures’
various life stages. She presents the material in clear and easily
understood text without sacrificing scientific accuracy.

The line drawings are large and clear, emphasizing the most
identifiable features of the insects and bugs; the drawings make
identification a breeze.

Bugwise is more than just an identification guide, however: it presents
a series of activities that young entomologists can pursue without
harming the creature being studied.

Emphasizing the need to respect the environment, Hickman encourages
readers to return all specimens to where they came from, and to leave
the areas studied in the same condition they found them.

This book is worth getting for any youngster fascinated by the world of
insects.
