Review

This book, part of Crabtree’s new Historic Communities series,
includes pictures, stories, and information about the one-room school,
sawmills, gristmills, the general store, settlers’ homes, and crafters
of wood and metal. The topics are presented with many large, colorful
photographs and illustrations, and in language appropriate for junior
students. More-difficult words are in bold print and are explained in
the glossary. The photographs are from well-known Canadian pioneer
museums at Black Creek, Sainte-Marie, Lang, and Upper Canada. Thoughtful
questions are included to help children analyze their visits or think
about their reading.

Visiting a Village would be an excellent book to show children prior to
a visit to a pioneer museum, or it could be a memorable souvenir of such
a trip. It could also initiate a follow-up writing or research project.

Highly recommended as an addition to Canadiana collections.
