Review

Magic and evil are at odds in this struggle for survival. Just as young
friends Guillaume and Didier learn the story of the sword of Arhapal and
the winged demon (a great horned owl), the sword is stolen. They suspect
the son of the local nobility.

The children live in New France, in the early 1700s. The historical
setting adds much to the story’s suspense and intrigue. Recovering the
sword is complicated by class differences and by the mysterious forces
of sorcery and evil.

Published originally in French, this volume is a sequel to Scorpion’s
Treasure, in Sernine’s chronicle of five French and Native families in
New France.
