Review

Directions is packed with information on libraries, library education,
and library services in Manitoba. Major chapters are devoted to public
libraries, college and university libraries, special libraries and
information centres, significant collections, the library profession,
the library user and library associations. Library personnel based in
Manitoba are among the book’s contributors.

Library supporters and activists in other Canadian communities should
draw inspiration from the stories of how libraries in rural and urban
Manitoba were built through a combination of community support and
fundraising. The major provincial resources are carefully described (the
section on the Legislative Library is especially strong) and there are
fascinating are the articles on little-known resources such as the
Western Canada Pictorial Index project and the Family Information
Library at Children’s Hospital. This valuable resource presents a
wealth of information in an accessible format.
