Review

High-school life in Hamilton, Ontario, appears much like that found
anywhere else—peer pressure and school work are part of a teen’s
daily routine. Kim fears being labelled “a loser” and dreams of a
career as a standup comic. She creates four characters—each of whom
parodies different characteristics of people she knows—to act out in
her routines. She becomes less and less dependent on the approval of her
friends, and as she matures she finds that these relationships lack
depth.

She eventually discovers that her comedy routines are more successful
when she does a solo act. Toward the end of her high-school years she is
beginning to understand that satisfaction with other aspects of her life
can also be achieved by using her own inner strengths and resources.

Author Mitzi Dale creates a likeable character with a sense of humor
that is applied to herself as well as those around her.
