Review

Boid Boyd is a lonely only child who wants to go to school and have
friends his own age. Though he is different from the other children (he
is a bird; his parents found him in Central Park), Boid finds friends in
Room 6 at PS 1134. Unfortunately, the two class bullies, Biff and Boff,
make his life very difficult, but Boid, who advises “To learn karate
and Kung Fu, why don’t you read a book or two?” manages to teach
them a lesson.

Boid and the Bullies is a 47-page book that Grade 3 children would
enjoy reading. It would be a useful discussion book for primary classes
on social behavior and for teaching acceptance of people who are
different. The illustrations are humorous and cartoon-like. Toronto
writer McConnell created this as a sequel to his earlier Baby Boid; he
is also the author of the Norbert Nipkin series.
