Review

Jonathan is a small brown mouse who lives with his mother and father in
a lovely white house. They have an elegant mouse home behind the
baseboard, and they always have plenty of good food, dropped by a
careless cook in the main kitchen. While sampling some cheesecake,
Jonathan falls into a pot of jam but manages to escape. A tea party is
in progress as he runs through the room, however, and he frightens the
finely dressed ladies. A cat is immediately hired, but she likes mice,
so life goes happily on for the mouse family. Cheesecake remains
Jonathan’s favorite food.

Young children will enjoy listening to this read-aloud story as they
follow the curious Jonathan’s adventures. The book is written to allow
the reader to dramatize the plot, and it encourages the child to
mentally answer the questions posed. The minute detail in the charming
black-and-white sketches faithfully illustrates the story line and,
again, helps the child become involved. A delightful book for a quiet
time.
