Review

This tale is of a lonely little boy, Jackie, who lives on a farm. His
parents present him with a duck, Little Quack, for companionship. The
duck disappears twice, causing the child distress and a sense of loss.
The first time, Little Quack wanders away to meet the neighbors’
ducks; and the second, she provides everyone with a surprise: ten
ducklings. The story is simple and pleasant, but it is not one that a
parent would want to read too often, or, in fact, that a child would
want to hear frequently.

Denton’s illustrations are fine and delicate, their exquisite pastel
colors suffused with warm orange. The drawings enhance the text
beautifully, but they are so far superior to the words that they alone
might be more effective in telling the tale.
