Review

This retelling of a Hans Christian Andersen tale is about a soldier who
rescues an old woman’s tinder box and finds huge chests of money
guarded by dogs with enormous eyes. The soldier is eventually able to
marry a beautiful princess. It is a quaint story that will delight and
amuse readers.

The illustrator has successfully captured the expressions in the
dog’s huge eyes—unique expressions that greatly enhance the story. I
found myself going back through the book just to look at them again.

The binding is durable, and the quality is excellent. This book will
last and be enjoyed by countless children. It will especially appeal to
those in grades 3 to 4. A good addition to any library.
