Review
This work is part of the Historic Communities Series, which also
includes The Gristmill, The Kitchen, and Visiting a Village.
It describes, for young readers, such pioneer crafts as spinning,
dyeing, soap making, wordworking, and candle dipping. The text is
illustrated with many color photographs showing artisans in pioneer
costumes making each craft as well as the finished product. The
photographs were taken at Black Creek Pioneer Village, Upper Canada
Village, and Saint-Marie Among the Hurons. There are also several
hand-drawn black-and-white illustrations.
Terms that contemporary juvenile readers might not know such as
“sampler” and “hackle”) are defined throughout the book.
