Review

Don Brestler worked as a ranch hand and cowboy before pursuing an art
career. In this book, he imparts a wealth of information about the
evolution of the Canadian West (chiefly the area from the Great Plains
and across the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean). A Young Adult’s Guide to
the Canadian West is divided into five sections that take readers from
the nomadic life of the First Nation people, through the arrival of the
pioneers and settlers, up to the building of towns and the development
of the land. The book is entertaining and informative, but tends to
presuppose special knowledge on the part of the reader. The absence of
maps to support the many place references is also unfortunate.
Recommended with reservations.
