Review

My First Canadian Words and My First Canadian Trucks will be just as
appealing to toddlers as the previous two volumes in the series, My
First Canadian ABC and My First Canadian 123. Attractively designed and
lavishly illustrated with colourful, clearly labelled photographs, they
are a perfect size for small hands to hold. The sturdy binding allows
for plenty of wear and tear—a fact to which this reviewer can readily
attest!

My First Canadian Words, a simple picture dictionary, introduces
familiar objects and concepts. Each double-page spread deals with a
different category: colours, numbers, parts of the body, toys, farm
animals, shapes, food and drink, and items for bath time. In the
clothing section, the “Canadian” content is most evident: tuque is
given its French-Canadian spelling, as opposed to the more familiar
French toque).

My First Canadian Trucks contains almost every kind of truck
imaginable. Small trucks, heavy trucks, winter trucks (including an ice
resurfacer), dump trucks, diggers and loaders, cranes and lifters, farm
trucks, and fire trucks are just some of the many depicted here. A
variety of activities requiring children to compare, count, and match
the trucks are found in the latter part of the book. Simply poring over
the photographs learning to identify and name the many kinds of vehicles
will result in hours of fun and enjoyment. Both volumes are recommended.
