Inventions: Frequently Asked Questions

Based on the “frequently asked questions” format made popular on the
Internet, this colourful volume seeks to encourage the next generation
of inventors by showcasing a wide range of essential and interesting
artifacts and inventions. The book begins with two chapters on how and
why people invent things, and ends with the question “Can kids
invent?” Sandwiched between is everything from transportation and
computers to foods and medicine.

At first I found it difficult to see a pattern to the collection. It
appeared to be just another book of fun facts with no underlying theme.
However, after a while I began to notice that there is a strong element
of history. The timeline included at the back of the book shows entries
from prehistory to 1985.

I was disappointed in the three suggested activities to encourage the
readers to invent something themselves. Encouraging creativity is a
serious challenge in itself that doesn’t lend itself to an add-on
activity. On the other hand, the stories of inventors and the sources
for their work are very revealing of the kinds of life situations that
bring out inventiveness. In summary, this book offers a lively
introduction to invention and its role in our life. The layout is
engaging, with boxes and other areas separated by colourful cartoon
illustrations. Recommended.
