Lisa Arsenault is an elementary-school teacher in Ajax, Ontario.

This latest volume in the Kids Can Do It series describes 12 projects
made from hardware parts. The projects range from jewelry-like pins and
bracelets to magnets and key chains, culminating with a chess set.

The “necessary materials” section for all the products is quite
complete. It lists the small-parts items needed for each project
according to function and according to where they would be located in a
hardware store. Then the required tools are listed and described, as
well as any glues, tapes, and craft supplies. Tips and techniques
follow, with an emphasis on safety.

A photograph of each completed project is accompanied by clear
step-by-step instructions, and a list of materials needed. The steps are
numbered and illustrated with coloured diagrams. Several of the projects
can be adapted, and suggestions for these adaptations are provided in an
“other ideas” section.

Funky Junk is a unique but practical addition to the arts-and-crafts
genre for children. Metal hardware parts have a durable, hard-edged
polish that makes for lasting, finished-looking creations. Their
durability ensures that they will stand up to a lot of use. Young people
I consulted were particularly taken with the chess set, which definitely
lives up to its “heavy metal” caption.
