Review

Having sailed from the old country to settle in Port Joli, Nova Scotia,
10-year-old twin siblings Jack and Holly find themselves missing their
homeland and especially their friends. It is Christmastime, and both
children seem to have lost their Christmas spirit. A stranger who helped
to carry the bags off the ship befriends the children. The stories
“Uncle Captain” tells the children become a brief refuge from their
sadness. But it is the story of the magical Christmas light that
captures their imagination and helps them to find the true meaning of
Christmas.

Bruce Nunn has created a spellbinding tale that takes the reader on a
magical adventure. Focusing on the folklore surrounding mysterious
lights, Nunn relates a bit of Nova Scotia history while bringing to the
forefront the true spirit of the Christmas season. Adding interest to
the story are Yolanda Poplawska’s beautiful, richly coloured
illustrations. One cautionary note: although this is a picture book, it
has a substantial text. If read to a younger child, it should perhaps be
shared over several sittings. Recommended.
