Review

In Avril Tyrrell’s gentle story of family traditions, the Christmas
ornaments reflect on past generations. The Elf has the place of honour
on the top branches of the tree. Being the oldest decoration, he keeps
the others informed of changes in the family from year to year. As the
homemade painted birds and Santas are removed from their tissue paper
blankets, “all the children, all the people, who have had a part”
are remembered.

Frances Tyrrell’s pencil-crayon illustrations are softly focused and
suffused with a yellow glow. Christmas craft instructions are included
at the end of the book. This warm holiday story is recommended.
