Review

The first three volumes in the The Chronicles of Faerie series—The
Hunter’s Moon, The Summer King, The Light-Bearer’s
Daughter—enjoyed much success with young-adult readers. This
much-anticipated concluding volume picks up Dana’s story a few years
after the events in The Light-Bearer’s Daughter when she, her father,
and her stepmother have moved to Toronto.

Dana is desperately unhappy. She misses Ireland, finds Canada a land
without magic, and is struggling with growing up. She tries to cope by
escaping to the other side of her heritage and visiting her mother and
the land of Faerie. When all the gates to Faerie are destroyed, Dana
learns that only she can restore them. To do so, she must find the Book
of Dreams. With the help of Jean Ducharm, a transfer student from Quebec
who has magic of his own, and various champions of Faerie who were
featured in the previous books, Dana sets off to save Faerie. It is a
quest that forces her to confront all aspects of her heritage—mortal
and Faerie, Irish and Canadian—and leads her to appreciate the magic
of Canada.

The Book of Dreams deals with more adult themes and is much more
complex than the previous three volumes in the series. It is beautifully
written and highly recommended.
