Review

Award-winning photojournalist Zoran Milich presents 30 colorful
photographs of city life. The clear, striking pictures are artfully
composed and stand out against thick white borders. The only text in the
book appears on the signs or vehicles captured in the photos.
Preschoolers will recognize such familiar sights as police cars, fire
trucks, and school buses and will delight in understanding the words.
Many photographs offer contextual clues, such as swings and slides in
the background of the “Park”; boxes of fruit for sale in front of
the “Supermarket”; and a hand holding a strawberry double cone by
the “Ice Cream” truck. The last photograph shows a crossing guard
holding a “Stop” sign and provides a witty ending. The photographs
reinforce visual literacy skills and children will be eager to search
for signs they can read in their own surroundings. Highly recommended.
