Review

Bob Bartlett was born in 1875 in Brigus, Newfoundland. The oldest of 11
children, he came from a family of fishing and sealing captains. At the
age of 16, he joined the sealing fleet and on his first seal hunt
survived a near-fatal accident. Over the next 50 years, he went on more
than 20 major Arctic expeditions, including two with U.S. Admiral Robert
E. Peary. On one of those voyages, he walked 700 miles across the Arctic
to Siberia, saving the lives of 14 people through his ingenuity and
stamina. His achievement was recognized by the Royal Geographic Society.
During the war years, he sailed his schooner back and forth across the
Atlantic, defying the German U-boats as he transported radio equipment
and supplies to Britain.

This well-written book captures the amazing exploits of this remarkable
man in an engaging manner. Quotations from Captain Bartlett enliven the
text, which is accompanied by illustrations and maps. Aimed at preteen
readers, The Amazing Adventures of Captain Bob Bartlett is highly
recommended.
