In One for Day/One for Night, Irene Watts retells two stories that are
based on the work of George MacDonald (1824–1905), a Scottish preacher
and teacher who wrote several classic fairy tales. The first, “The
Light Princess,” is a story about lightness and gravity. Princess
Leora is soon to be christened, and her father is so happy that he
invites everyone to attend. But he forgets to invite his sister. She
becomes so angry that she casts a spell on the baby: gravity will never
have any effect on Leora—she will always be light.
The second, “Little Daylight,” is a story about light and dark.
When Little Daylight is a baby, the Swamp Witch casts a spell on her
that is governed by the moon. When the moon is “new” or dark, Little
Daylight will wither and fade, but when the moon is full and bright, the
youngster will glow with life. As in all good fairy tales, a curse needs
to be broken, rhymes and challenges abound, and, in the end, good
triumphs over evil. Mark Lang’s striking illustrations enhance the
stories, which are intended for children in Grades 3 to 6. Recommended.
