Review

Billie Stoner, an irrepressible tomboy, knows that being the daughter of
the school librarian can make life even more difficult than she already
finds it. One day, Billie’s arch rival, Alyssa, steals Billie’s
backpack and accidentally uses the magic vanishing powder hidden inside.
When Billie discovers what Alyssa has done, Billie has to decide whether
she’s going to help Alyssa return to normal or leave her
invisible—possibly forever.

Plots and counterplots flourish like mushrooms on a damp day in this
comical story. The energy and unpredictability of the preteens fuels the
action, humor, and dialogue. Particularly enjoyable are the graphite
illustrations by Abby Carter, including the cover scene of mayhem in the
library, the children’s excitement during a school trip to New York
City, and their antics on a bus. Recommended.
