Review

Ann Ewan received a degree in linguistics from the University of
Toronto, specializing in Old English, Irish Gaelic, and Latin. That
background has served her well in Firedrake, which is set in a mystical
and timeless land of fantasy.

Shan is an unlikely but appealing heroine. Barely an adult, and with
failing eyesight, she is living a soldier’s life, haunted by a
prophecy about a blind woman that she increasingly believes might be
herself. She teams up with a charismatic but unpredictable warrior and a
talented but untrained magician. The trio set out to defeat evil and, in
the course of their adventures, encounter sorcery, magic, and a dragon.

Young readers will find this book impossible to put down; so will
parents who happen to pick it up. Recommended.
