Review

Like many young girls, six-year-old Maxine is dog crazy. She watches
dogs, dreams about dogs, collects stuffed toy dogs and china dogs, and
even wears dog-patterned clothes. But more than anything else, she longs
for a real dog to call her own.

On a walk to the park with her older brother, Hugh, Maxine stops every
time she sees a dog, hoping for a kiss or a chance to pet each one. But
not all dogs are friendly. Hugh and some of the pet owners teach Maxine
how to know when it is safe to approach a dog, how to greet it, and what
to do to ensure a happy experience for both child and canine. This
veterinarian-approved information is presented in a way that entertains
young readers as they learn to “read” dog language.

France Brassard’s beautiful colour illustrations add a touch of
warmth to this delightful lesson about how to respect and get along
safely with man’s best friend. Recommended.
