Review

Jeff Sinclair, author of Across Canada and Totally Canada, now offers
Wacky Canada, a fun-filled book of facts, puzzles, quizzes, and games
about crazy aspects of Canada and of being Canadian. The book’s bold
colours, goofy cartoons, and interesting fonts will engage and appeal to
young readers. The volume is pure fun; it will get kids thinking about
Canada and help them learn about cities, provinces, and territories
beyond their own familiar area. Along with learning facts about the
beaver, notable Canadians, and Canada’s geography, kids will find out
that most UFO sightings in Canada occur in British Columbia and that our
fastest roller coaster is located in Montreal.

Activities in the book include matching cities and towns to their
province/territory, word searches and scrambles, mazes, multiple-choice
questions, and picture puzzles. There’s even a version of Snakes and
Ladders, but with otters to slide down and CN towers to climb up. Some
of the goofier aspects of the book, such as multiple-choice questions
that offer bizarre and improbable selections, are balanced by a few
pages of text that give straightforward and interesting information
about our country.

This inexpensive book will be useful to keep kids occupied on road
trips or to have around the house when the weather keeps them indoors.
Recommended.
