Review

An A-B-C book with a difference: it explores the contents of Mom’s
“really enormous” purse, literally from A to Z (a plastic airplane
to a zebra). Some of the contents of the huge handbag are useful and
believable, such as band-aids, hairpins, and a driver’s licence;
others are as outré as worms (possibly dead; who knows?) and a
xylophone. (Mom, the author, and the illustrator would be well advised
to leave the toy Indian out of the collection.) Mildly amusing, but much
of the fun is directed past the children to the indulgent read-aloud
adult.
