Review

Colourful and attractively designed, the Scholastic Children’s Atlas
of Canada is an excellent choice with which to introduce young children
to the use of maps and atlases.

Introductory pages define the term “map” and discuss such things as
perspective, scale, legend, and kinds of maps. A series of diagrams
illustrates the translation from globe to flat map and gives the origin
of the term “atlas.” Tips for maximizing the use of this atlas, a
world map, maps of Canada, and a brief overview of our country’s
history are all included.

Beginning with British Columbia on the west coast each province has two
double-page spreads devoted to it. The Yukon, Northwest Territories, and
Nunavut are grouped together. Topographical and political maps of each
province show the geographical features, natural resources, industries,
and agriculture. The maps are accompanied by informative text and
liberally illustrated with charts, photographs, and diagrams. Topic
headings in bold type and large, clear print make it easy to locate
information. Provincial flags, coats of arms, birds, flowers, trees, and
sometimes minerals are shown. “Do You Know” sidebars highlight
interesting facts and trivia. The atlas concludes with a summary of
facts about Canada (area, population, time zones, important lakes,
rivers, mountain ranges, 10 largest cities), and a glossary.

The wealth of information contained in this atlas makes it a valuable
resource for classroom, library, and personal collections. Though geared
to primary grades, junior grade children will find it just as useful and
appealing. Its sturdy binding will withstand plenty of handling. Highly
recommended.
