Review
Intended to make life a little easier for those new to the teaching
profession, this book examines various models designed to help teachers
formulate policies. The models include democratic, communication, group
management, behavior modification, social learning, cognitive, and
school wide. The authors also make reference to classical
interpretations, including those of Glasser, Piaget, Rogers, and
Kholberg. For this third edition, they have updated recent research in
the various models.
While the authors have clearly gone to great lengths to present a
balanced and unbiased view, their book would have benefited from a more
assertive stance on these issues. Save for the brief critique at the end
of each chapter, there is very little critical analysis. Most
disappointing of all is the final chapter, “Building Your Own
Approach.” The reader expecting a comprehensive and detailed model is
presented instead with a series of rather disjointed sections ranging
from “a consensus model,” to “developmental considerations,” to
“personal coping.”
For those starting out in the profession, Models of Classroom
Management has much to offer; teachers with more experience will find
the book less satisfying.
