Review

These six visually attractive books in the Pet Care series introduce the
young of cats, dogs, and four different rodents—the mammals most
commonly acquired by families. The books provide information that
children should know about caring for their pet, from selecting it and
providing a safe environment for it, to ongoing maintenance and
long-term care of the adult animal.

Each book begins with a description and labelled photograph of the
animal. This is followed by a description of its unique characteristics
and requirements under the heading “The Right Pet for You?” Specific
questions are raised to focus family discussions about ownership
readiness and expectations. Information is then provided on the various
breeds of that animal, guidelines for selecting a healthy pet, and
suggested equipment to have ready before the new pet is brought home.

Care and handling, feeding instructions, training, and grooming
techniques make up the major portions of the books. Everything is
clearly explained and well laid-out to make it accessible for young
readers.

A strength of the series is the wonderful full-colour photography of
the various animals. All the pictures, whether of pets or grooming
tools, stand out against white backgrounds. While the puppies and
kittens are especially adorable, children drawn to smaller animals will
be enthralled by cuddly guinea pigs and playful mice. Many of the
pictures portray multiracial children illustrating the correct handling
of the animals.

After reading the material, which is attractively presented, children
will be able to make an informed decision about selecting the
appropriate pet for them. They will have a basic knowledge of their
chosen pet, as well as the information necessary to properly care for
it. Highly recommended.
