Review

Abby and her dog, Opal, have a special place all their own—under the
table that’s covered with Gran Opal’s crocheted-lace tablecloth.
Opal, a big golden retriever, is pregnant and about to give birth. Abby
remembers her Gran Opal, and all of the splendid things that she did.
She died on the day Opal was born, and the dog was named after her. Abby
wishes she could be like her talented grandmother, who was able to bake,
make prizewinning lace tablecloths, and deliver babies.

One day, Abby’s Grandpa Jack injures his foot while trying to move a
tire into the puppy pen at the kennel. Abby’s mom must take him to the
hospital and leaves Abby in charge. Then Opal goes into labour. At
first, Abby worries that she won’t be able to help Opal, but she soon
finds the courage. After the first puppy is delivered, Abby coaxes it to
breathe. In her hands, the new life fills her with wonder.

In Abby’s Hands is a well-written, heartwarming story. The text is
generously illustrated with beautiful, lifelike images of Abby, her
family, Opal, and the puppies. The realistic images appear to be
paintings that have been computer-enhanced to look like photographs.
Highly recommended.
