Review

High-school senior Zoe Kendall’s dream to be a race-car driver is
being curtailed by her mother, who wants something different for her.
Zoe is easily swayed by her mother’s dreams as the family struggles to
stay intact (Zoe’s parents are on the verge of divorce). The teen
wants to keep peace in her family, and believes that by going along with
her mother’s idea that she become a doctor, her family will be happy
and stay together.

Dream Racer delves deeply into the teenage mind and family
relationships—specifically the parent–child relationship. Guest
proves through this novel that no matter what age, all children
typically want their mom and dad to be together, and will do anything to
ensure this happens—even though the children risk losing themselves in
the process. On the flip side, Guest also shows how parents can
sometimes get too caught up in planning their children’s lives,
especially when what they are really trying to do is fulfill their own
dreams. Dream Racer gives readers a very true-to-life story with many
realistic themes. Highly recommended.
