Review

Lacey has no clean clothes left so she is forced, much to her chagrin,
to wear a “Strange Grandma Present” to school. Sporting a T-shirt
that reads “KISS ME—I’M PERFECT,” she walks down the road. When
a cat hops up on her shoulder and gives her a kiss, her initial
embarrassment turns to surprise. The love continues when Lacey is
smooched by a dog, an eagle, a moose, and even a giant bear.

Michael Martchenko’s watercolour cartoons are chock full of funny,
exaggerated details. When Lacey overturns all of her dresser drawers, a
mouse falls out clutching tiny socks. The story ends with Grandma
pushing a shopping cart piled sky-high with T-shirts for all of
Lacey’s classmates.

Robert Munsch’s story is infused with his trademark humour and
comedic timing. There are many opportunities for children to join in
with exaggerated sound effects such as the moose’s slimy
“SPHLURRRRRRCHHH” and the indignant “GWAAACHHH” after the boy
kiss. Highly recommended.
